Force is a word used to denote total pressure or influence to cause motion or movement. To determine the total force on the head of a piston of 10 square inches in area, and under a pressure of 25 pounds per square inch, you may use the following formula:
F = A x P
F = total force
A = area of the piston head (which is 10 sq. in.)
P = pressure (which is 25 pounds per sq. in.)
To solve the above problem:
F = 10 x 25
F = 250 pounds
