Specific gravity (sp. gr.) is defined as the ratio of the weight of a certain volume of a substance as compared to the weight of an equal volume of water. Water is considered to have a specific gravity of one.

Object witch float on the water has a specific gravity of less than one. Mixtures of salt and water (brine) have a specific gravity than one. A calcium chloride brine adjusted to freeze at 0 F. will have a specific gravity of 1.18.
